Memories

I got to know Pauline really well in the last year before she died. Spending time with someone who knew she hadn’t much time left should have been difficult and painful,  but somehow it was anything but.  She chatted away about everyone and everything right up to the end.  She was fun, dammit.  And she wasn’t afraid to talk about the elephant in the room.  I learned a lot about how to die – and therefore, how to live – from her.  I wish I could thank her.
